Reach Back Guard Pass for No-Gi BJJ/MMA

Apparently some people just completely disregarded my disclaimer on yesterday's post. I haven't, and I never will condone Aikido as a martial art that is usable under pressure. Don't worry.

Anyway, back to proper grappling.

Today, the move is the "Reach Back Guard Pass," or as I like to call it, "the Reach Around," taking full advantage of my situation as a club teacher to make people uncomfortable while I am in their guard. Gay jokes aside, this is actually a great No-Gi guard pass, and a decent Gi pass.

It's great in practice, but if you're one of those guys who don't spend the time drilling moves, (I'm looking at you, rolling addicts) there's a good chance that you're going to be just slow and sloppy enough to feed your opponent a Triangle attempt. So, take note of the subtle moves near the beginning. The setup is key.

From Crackle: Reach Back Guard Pass

-You're in your opponent's guard

-You feel out which foot is on top. (My tip- push down on the knees with your elbows and try to feel out the pressure on your back. You'll get used to it eventually.)

-Now, you stand up in base, still controlling his hips. You don't just reach back, or else you'll get choked out before you can say "BJJ."

*For MMA only* Feel free to punch him in the face right before you reach back- he'll think it's a GNP attempt, and possibly let go of his guard, opening up more possibilities for you.

-Reach back on the side of the top foot, pull, and pass into side mount.

...Well, crap. That's what I was doing wrong.

Thank you!

I'm assuming you were reaching back while either staying on your knees, or with your head down.

Glad you caught it :)
